CONTROL OF TRAFFIC.
NEW PROPOSALS. System To Be Revised. Press Association —Copyright. Wellington, April 15. A number of proposals for dealing with the problem of traffic control in the Dominion are ait present under consideration by the Minister ot Transport, Mr. Semple. It is proposed to revise the system so that cilies and boroughs wjth a population exceeding 6000 will be reponsible for Hhelr own enforcement, as at present, while the Government will be responsible for smaller centred and rural areas. The proceeds from the issue of drivers’ licenses will be distributed to , those authorities 1 reponsible for the j control ot traffic. A new driver will require to present a certificate ot his competency to drive, supplied by an approved testing officer. The fee will still be 5/-. This will be allocated as follows: —6d. to the Post and Telegraph Department to cover expenses, 40 per cent to city and borough councils, and 60 per cent to .the Consolidated Fund. From May 31, 1938, it is proposed to pay fines' into the Fund instead of paying them into the Main Highways Account. The proceeds of fines resulting from prosecutions conducted by city and larger borough traffic officers will continue to be paid into the accounts of the respective local bodies, after the deduction of the fine as alt pre- • sent. Traffic officers' will be increased in ardicr to control the smaller centres and rural aeas.
