GAY TALKIE SOLD.
v Acquired by Maharajah of Idar. The threee-year-old colt. Gay Talkie, j owned by Mr. L. G. Abel, of Papa- | kura, has been sold to Mr. A. D. Pot- I ter, of Auckland, and will do his fu- ' ture racing in India. Mr. Potter was i acting tor the Maharajah of Idar, tor ; whom the ex-New Zealand jockey L. H. Hewitt trains, and the price paid was a very substantial, four-figure one. Gay Talkie is by Gay Shield from Picture, by St. Amans from Shower Gold, by Marble Arch from Merry Nil. His dam is therefore a half-sister to King Lu. Kerry Nit is the dam of General Latour, sire of Karapoti, who also did well in India. As a two-year-old last season Gay Talkie started on a dozen occasions, his best performances being third in the Rakino Handicap at New Plymouth and second to Clessamor in the Juvenile Handicap and to Hamarin in the Electric Handicap at Stratford. These were all five-furlong events. This season Gay Talkie won the Swanson Handicap, one mile, at Avondale, was third in the Avondale Guineas. won the second division of the Gordon Handicap, six furlongs, at Ellerslie, and the Normanby Handicap, one mile, at the same meeting, was second in the President’s Handicap, one mile and a quarter, at the Dargaville meeting at Avondale, won the Whangarei Cup, of similar distance, was third in the Park Handicap, one mile, at the same meeting, and recently, after finishing third in the Franklin Cup, one mile and a quarter, won the Ohinemuri Cup, one mile and three furlongs, at Paeroa, and the H. O. Nolan Handicap, one mile and a half, at Ellerslie, while he finished third in the Foley Memorial Handicap, one mile and a quarter, at Avondale. These were his best performances, and there is little doubt that if he had been engaged in the Great Northern St. Leger he would have accounted for that even seeing the field he beat in the Nolan Handicap. This makes the second horse purchased in the North Island recently for India. A few weeks ago Martara, another three-year-old, was acquired tor Mr. A. Higgins. Gay Talkie will be sent to India in charge of I. Tucker in about a month's time.
