QUEEN CONSORT.
Effect on Fashions. In 1937 London will be fashion’s centre, and there will be more gorgeous dresses here than have been seen in England for a century. Exquisite brocades, satins and velvets are being brought from the country’s looms for dresses for the Coronation season. The inspiration of the dress designers will be the Watteau and Louis Quinze period. Colours will be delicate and will include shades of old rose, purple, petunia and blue, skirts will billow', hats will be of the “cartwheel” variety, and women will perforce have to be dignified and stately. The fact that there is now a Queen Consort will have its effect on fashion, since there will be double the amount of entertaining than would have been the case with a bachelor King. Queen Elizabeth has always followed a style of her own. her clothes being picturesque rather than smart, and entirely in accord with her gentle personality. This tact will probably indicate a return to femininity in female fashion.
