SYDNEY GOES GAY.
CORONATION LIGHTING Harbour Bridge Spectacle. Thousands of pounds will be spent on decorating and illuminating Sydney for the Coronation celebrations in May, says a Sydney- paper. The scheme for the harbour bridge alone will cost £3OOO. The Minister in charge of the celebrations, Mr Dunnibgham, said that the harbour bridge would be seen for the first time completely decorated with coloured lamps and illuminated devices.
The tramway dejot at Fort Macquarie and the waterfront along the Botanical Gardens w 11 be illuminated. Public buildings throughout the city Will be decorated with flags and other ornamentation, and at night the lighting decorations will be switched on.
Councils of the harbour suburbs have been asked to organise house decorations, and the City Council and Commonwealth authorities will (lecorate buildings under their control. The City Council, in addition, has arranged for block committees to organise displays of light and bunting in various sections of the city. Special concessions in. the rate charged: for electricity for the illuminations will be made by the County Council.
It is anticipated that the lights and wiring and many of the other decorations will be used again for the anniversary celebrations next year. The illuminations will be switched on on .May 11—Coronation eve —and will be -displayed nightly, probably for a week.
