NEAR SANTANDER Rebel Vessels Fire. Press Association—Copyright. Received 11.5 a.m. Bayonne, March 29. Firing six shells, rebel warships stopped the British steamer Magdalena, near Santander, northern Spain, en route from Lagoulette, Tunisia, to Bayonne, whither it was allowed, to proceed after disclosing its identity.
LINER FIRED ON. Cruiser to the Rescue. Press Association—Copyright. Marseilles, March 29. The FrencK liner Imerethie 11, when steaming past Cape Nao at dawn on Thursday, was hailed by the rebel warship Canarias and ordered to stop. Blank shots were fired across her bows. The commander of the Imerethie replied that he was going to Alicante to bring off refugees and refused to stop, whereupon the Canarias fired a shell.
The Imerethie then reported the situation to the French cruiser Suffren, which was in the vicinity. The Canarias sheered off when the S-uffren arrived to escort the Imerethie to her destination.
