DETECTIVE FORCE.

Efficiency Measures in Victoria. Melbourne, March 27. Victoria’s detective force is to be made efficient by means of specialised instruction. The Chief Commissioner of Police, Mr Alex. Duncan, has invited qualified men in the force to apply for the post of instructor in charge of the detective training course. Several assistant instructors are also being sought to lecture on phases of crime detection.

The senior instructor must possess a. knowledge of chemistry, photography, physics, ballistics, and allied subjects. Assistant instructors will be required to lecture- on detective activities generally, prevention of crime, powers of , arrest;: observation and questioning of subjects, interrogation of witnesses, methods of identification by parade and photographs, and the finding, recording and identification ot fingerprints. Mr Duncan’s alm is to ensure to the community a ’service which makes the detection of icAme swift and certain. He intimated to-day that the training course would begin as soon as arrangements were completed. Immediate steps are being taken to increase the personnel of the detective force from 60 to 140. The additional men will come principally from the plainclothes 'branch, now amalgamated with the C. 1.8.
