BRITISH NEW ’PLANES.
MOSTLY BOMBERS. Lessons of Spanish War. Special—By Air Mail. London, March 3. Air Ministry experts building up a super R.A.F. for the defence of Britain are stipulating that 75 par cent, of the new squadrons shall be composed of bombers. It has been .found, after years of manoeuvres, that the fast air bomber cannot be stopped. Neither defending aeroplanes, guns, searchlights, nor even the famous “balloon barrage” will do more than hamper raiding squadrons by inflicting occasional casualties. British pilots home from fighting for the Madrid Government tell of the deadly twin-engined Soviet aeroplanes doing 250 m.p.h. and shooting 3600 bullets or tiny shells a minute. Franco’s German and Italian pilots fear the Soviet airmen. Yet even with Soviet ajd Madrid has been bombed whenever Franco chose to do so.
