SATURDAY'S RACE.

Presentation of Trophy to Winning Owner. An unusual trophy was part of the stake for the winner of the A. W. Budge Memorial Handicap at the Stratford Racing Club's autumn meeting on Saturday. It was a beautiful hall clock, standing some six feet In height and cased in dark walnut. At the conclusion of the race ths presentation to the owner of Reipar, Mr J. A. Todd, of Wanganui, was made. The president, Mr D. J. Malone, accompanied by the stewards ot the Stratford Racing Club and representatives of other Taranaki clubs, met Mrs A. W. Budge and members of her family in the birdcage. Mr Todd was accompanied by the trainer of Reipar, Mr H. W. Johnson, of Wanganui and the successful jockey, S. Edwards. “It was decided to mark the occasion of the club’s additional permit by commemorating the memory of one of Taranaki’s finest sportsmen,” said Mr D. J. Malone. The late Mi- Budge, during his long life, rendered great service to sport generally in the province. He was a member of the Taranaki District Racing- Committee, a country club’s delegate to the New Zealand Racing Conference, president of the Stratford Racing Club and honorary starter and judge to many of the clubs in the Taranaki district. “It is pleasing to see here to-day,” said Mr Malone, “representatives of all the racing clubs in Taranaki, who have come to do honour to the memory of a good sportsman and a fine citizen.” Mr Malone congratulated Mr Todd on his win with Reipar and asked Mrs A. W. Budge to present the trophy. Mr Todd suitably replied and paid a tribute to the work of his trainer and the riding of his jockey.
