The New Zealand United Fire Brigades’ biennial competitions commenced in /cold, drizzling rain, which later gave way to bright sunshine. The one-mian coupling and four-men motor events concluded this afternoon.

The Gilberd Memorial and gol ' medal for one-man coupling was won by F. H. Steward (Whakatane), who was second in the last competitions. Tfhe four-men motor, which was the first of the new modern events drawn up to cope with fire off a direct line of route, v.'as won by Nelson. Results are as follows: — One-man coupling: Whakatane, 50sec., 1: Hawera, 54 2-sscc., 2; Hastings, 55sec., 3; Carterton. 57sec.. 4; Denniston-, 58eec., 5; Rotorua. 62 4-ssec., 6. Twenty-nine started. Four-men motor: Nelson. 28 2-ssec., 1; Devonport, 29 2-ssec., 2; Hokitika, 33 l-ssec., 3; Dannevirke, 32sec., 4: Morrinsville, 34sec., 5; Featherston, 34 l-ssec„ 6. Twenty-eight started. ,
