MR. BALDWIN’S CAREER
If Mr Baldwin retires in June h will be within two months of his 70th year. He hat held the highest poll tical office in Britain three times sharing that distinction with Mr Ramsay MacDonald. He was first Prime Minister from May, 1923, to January, 1924;, then again from November, 1924, to June, 1929. Ha took over after the General Election in November in same year and continued up to the present time at the head of the Government, His Ministerial o ' ces have included Lord President c’ the Council, Lord Privy Seal Pres ■ dent of the Board of Trade, Chancellor of the Exchequer, and Fiuancl:Secretary to the Treasury. Before h>„ accepted Ministerial status he actf as private secretary to the late MBonar Law, Conservative 1 ader, o: Whose retirement Mr Baldwin step, ped from the Chancellorship’ to the’ Prime Ministership in 1923. As Lord President of th. Council, he headed the British delegation to Ottawa for the memorable Imperial Conference of 1932, and h? was subjected to considerable criticism or. his return for having conceded to much to the Dominions without hnving gained enough for Britain.. He weathered a far greater storm, how ever, in the abdication of King Edward VIII. last .year, when he st' i lastly set his face against any sucl; compromise as a morganatic marriage. M.r Baldwin’scoming retirement, has for months been discussed openly in England. Mr and Mrs Baldwin have long been regarded- as perfect examples of sturdy middle-class, -bourgeois type of English folk, with ultrarconventional Ideas and conceptions.
