FRUITLESS SEARCH

PRISONER’S ESCAPE. WILLIAM J. FOX. Taranaki District Scoured By Police. Although the police have conducted an extensive search of the Taranaki countryside, at 3 o’clock this afternoon no i trace has been found of the. missing prisoner, William Joseph Fox,, who escaped from custody at the Stratford railway station on Monday night. No reports were received of any cases of thefts of food or of any incident that might give the police a clue to the direction taken by Fox. It is considered likely that Fox has not been able to penetrate the police cordon drawn around the province and is still in the district.

Last night police officers were on duty at Whangamomona, Aotuhia, Kahouri bridge, Midhirst, and Eltham. The house at Brecon Road which he visited immediately after leaving the train is under surveillance.

Following a visit of Inspector J. Powell to Stratford last night, plans were completed for a more intensive search to be commenced at daybreak this morning by a force of nearly 20 police and warders. At Aotuhia, where the farm formerly managed by Fox is situated, the number of police has been increased from two to five.
