The District Attorney, Mr. Byron Fitts, who investigated the slaying of Doheny in 1929 and led the inquiry into the suicide of Bern in 1934, was wounded in the left arm to-day. The shot was fired by one of four men who forced Mr. Fitts’ car into the kerb in a suburban street. Mr. Fitts was unable to recognise any of the occupants of the other car, Which was driven rapidly away. Mr. Fitts has been conferring with the police chief at Santa Monica with regard to the strike in the Douglas aircraft works] It is said that he had received several threatening letters in the past week, due to his activity in obtaining conspiracy indictments against 300 “sit-down” strikers at the Douglas plant.
