SOUTHLAND FLOODS
MAN DROWNED.
SWEPT FROM HORSE. Mataura River Breaks Its Banks. Frees Association —Copyright. Invercargill, Last Night. While crosing the back water of the flooded Makarewa River on horseback this afternoon, Mr. John Cuff, aged 35 years, emloyed on a farm at Tusock Creek, was in some manner unseated and is believed to have been drowned. A search made for the body was unsuccesful owing to the river being in high flood. He was seen being apparently washed off his horse by a boy who went for assist-
ance. When others arrived the man could not be seen and the horse was on the opposite side of the river. The most serious flood since the Mataura River broke its banks in 1913 occurred at Wyndham to-day. When residents awoke this morning a recreation ground and a bowling green at the north end of the town were inundated to a depth of two and a-half feet in places. By 10 o’clock several of the residents in that part of the town had to leave. Others who were in the path of the flood waters began to move their belongings to safety. The flood waters moved down Ferry Street and, crossing Main Street, flowed into Alma Street.
