CORONATION WEEK.

STRATFORD CELEBRATIONS. Decisions at Meeting of Committee. Good progress was made with the organisation of a Stratford celebration of the coronation at the meeting of the committee last night. The Coronation Ball is to be held on the Wednesday, Coronation Day, Mr. A. E. Pollock stated that he had organised' a strong committee and that it was important that a definite date should be. named so as to keep the night free from competition. He also raised the question of responsibility in the event of a loss being made.

On this point, the Mayor, Mr. J. W. McMillan., who presided, said that he was emphatically of opinion that the finance of all the coronation functions should be done through the committee .to form one fund. If any other course was adopted the committee would be a farce. The disposal of any profit could be decided on subsequently. Personally he considered that the best object that any such money could be devoted to would be to the Stratford aerodrome, in the development of which heavy expense would be involved.

Children's Celebration.

An indoor function for the children was recommended by Messrs' A. H. R. Amess, principal of the Stratford Technical High School, and L. J. Furrie, headmaster of the Stratford Primary School. They suggested dn indoor function followed by some entertainment, such as attendance at a suitable picture show. Mr. J. W. Morrison taised the question of whether the country children of the Stratford and V/hangamomona counties.' would be included iin the Stratford function. Mrs G. Lamplough, secretary of the Central Taranaki Executive of the W.D.F.U. considered that it was essential that the country children should also be able to take part. Mr. Amess pointed out that it might not be possible to get a building, sufficiently large to accommodate both the town and the country children. It was left to Messrs Amess and Furrie to acertain what accommodation would be available and what financial assistance would be forhcoming through the Education Department.

Tree Planting.

The Stratford Horticultural Society advis'd that it was willing to organise the tree planting in connection with the celebrations and to carry out the appeal for donations of suitable trees. Several suggestions were made with regard to the streets that should be planted. The committee Were inclin ed to view favourably a scheme to plant on the Mountain road on the north and south en.k- of the Stratford business area. This would fit in with a national scheme to plant the highway from end to end of the island, z The Stratford Football Club advised that it was willing to make every effort towards running a football tournament, in connection with the celebrations. It was left in the hands of Mr. L. J. Furrie to make arrangements with the club and with the Taranaki Rugby Union. A letter from the Stratford Aero Club with regard to running a rally as a club opening during the Week was received. Mr McMillan will consult with the executive of the club with regard to this function. A suggestion of Mr. D. J. Malone that the Stratford branch of the British Drama League be approached to organise performance in connection with the celebrations, was adopted and Mr. A. H. R. Amess, was deputed to approach the League. Those present were: Messrs J. W, McMillan (chairman), Percy Thomson, F. E. Clarke, C. R. F. Tilley, D. Steven, D. J. Malone, L. J. Furrie, A. H. R. Amess, W. F. Kennedy, J. Morrison, A. E. Pollock, Mrs G. Lamplough. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs. R. F. Harkness, Mrs Percy Thomson and Rev. K. J. McFarland.
