CROSSING SMASH.

Train Struck Car at Level Crossing. A fortunate escape from serious injury was the let lagt evening of Mr C. E. James, a commercial traveller of NevJ Plymouth, when his. car was struck on the level crossing between Tariki and Midhirst by a goods train a,t 5.45 p.m.., Although Mr. James suffered only some slight bruises, his car was damaged probably beyond repair. While driving northwards to New Plymouth at 5.45 p.m. yesterday, in mist and heavy rain, which rendered visibility bad, Mr. Janus was able to see nothing of a goods train, also travelling to New Plymouth, until the engine was almost on him as his car approached the crossing. By that time it v.-'as too late to avoid a smasTh and the engine struck the car on the left, carrying it for 30 yards b fore the train could be stopped. At the point of impact the car was extensively damaged and a breakdown truck later took it to Inglewood.
