Important Point for Poultry Producers. Press Association—Copyright. Christchurch, Last Night. "A very important question affecting poultry producers throughout New ZealantJ is raised by the bring ing of this charge,” said Mr W. R. Russell, who appeared for the defendant in a charge against the Red Comb Egg and Poultry Company, which was. heard in the Magistrate's Court before Mr E. C. Levvey, S.M. The company was charged with failing to register premises under the Factories Act.
The charge was brought by the Labour Department, which was represented by Mr R. T. Bailey. Mr Russell said in defence that a place where eggs were simply tested could not be termed a factory, and that in the circumstances the company was not carrying on as a factory.
In the box. the manager of the Rod Comb Egg and Poultry Company (W. H. West) said that the only poultry producers who were registered under the Factories Act were those who manufactured egg pulp.
’’l am satisfied that the charge comes within the provisions of the Act,” said the magistrate in imposing a fine of 10/- and costs. The defence asked for an increase in penalty in the event of an appeal, hut the magistrate pointed out that as the appeal would be based on a point of law, it Was not necessary to increase the fine.
