MOUNTAIN SERVICE.
REQUEST TO READERS Climbers and Tourists’ Map Of Egmont. (Ta the Editor). Sir,—While in Wellington recently I had occasion to call at the main office of the Lands and Survey Department to purchase a map of tho Tararuas. I took the opportunity to inquire what the possibilities were of having a similar map of Mount "Egmont prepared and learnt that such a map was in course of preparation and should be ready for issue within a few months'. The map apparently is designed to show the main topographical and other features only, the more important altitudes, ridges, valleys, rivers, roads and tracks, hostels and huts. More material could, however, be included depending upon selling price and number likely to be
sold especially when first put on the market. This it' the point I would like particularly to place before your readers as it is of importance to all people using the mountain or interested in making it the tourist attraction it should be.
The proposed price is 2/6, and it the sale of 300 to 400 copies could be guaranteed upon publication then more material could be included, as for example notes as to grade and condition of roads, ski-ing elopee, months ski-ing is available on various slopes, summer and winter climbing routes, condition of huts, number of bunks therein, controlling authority. type of bush or other vegetation, etc. This it' the material which particularly interests those wishing to develop the mountain d)t distinct from the surveyors to whom it is jutt a piece of country which they have to survey. I have been asked to suggest any material which the Stratford Mountain Club or others interested would like to have included in the proposed map and also to give an estimate of the number of maps that could be sold immediately upon publication from the Stratford and nearby area ata price of say 2/6 or 3/-. I would, therefore, beg your space to bring this matter before your readers and to ask those in the Stratford afea prepared to buy the proposed map to l"t me have tholr names within the next fortnight or so, so that I can make my report and ascertain if the additional material cau be included. —I am, etc., A. W. WHITE, Club Captain. Stratford Mountain Club.
