GARAGES PREPARED

PRIVATE CAR INSPECTION Ail Vehicles Must Conform By March. Garage proprietors in Stratford have now l received instructions with regard to the six-monthly inspection of private motor vehicles, which becomes' compulsory under the new traffic regulations, from March 1. The actual issuing of warrants of fitness will be commenced at the beginning of next week. The organisation for this work is. being carried out through cooperation with the New Zealand Garage Proprietors’ Association. Garages rated as A grade by the association, of which there are five in Stratford, become automatically authorised to issue certificates. Other garages rated B grade are to be inspected by officers of the Transport Department, but only membert of the association are eligible for the work. Resources of garages will be taxed to the utmost to carry out the huge amount of work that is involved in bringing the condition of every car into line with the requirements of the Act, but there is little opportunity for motorists to evade their new obligations. Certificates can only be issued when cars conform in all respects to the requirements of the traffic regulations concerning!' conitructlon, equipment and condition and can reasonably be expected to remain in that condition for some time. Special points mentioned in the regulations are brakes, headlights, rear vision mirror, warning device, windscreen wiper, tall lights, wheel alignment, steering and door locks. As hit reputation Is at stake there is no possibility of the garage proprietor issuing a certificate unless' he is thoroughly satisfied that a car is in every respect in a satisfactory condition. He is required to make a return of every certificate issued and in the case of a motoritt refusing to have defects, exposed through inspection, remedied, he is required to report this when making his returns giving the registered number of the car. ,A periodical check-up of the work of the garages will be carried out by officers of the Transport Department and any proprietor wrong fully issuing a certificate may have his authority to carry out inspection Withdrawn.
