The Field of Sport

BOWLING.

(By "Jack.”) Shield competitions were continued last week and only three rounds remain to be played. With the Eltham teams forfeiting to both Stratford teams, the postponed game between Stratford A and B was played and re suiting in the A team winning by a good margin and are now in an impregnable position having a clear lead : over Stratford B and Eltham A. * * *

The defeat of Avon A by the B team was somewhat of a surprise as the latter team had only won one game In the competition. The Avon A team are now practically out of the competition. * * * Avon A vtere without several of their regular players including Boundy and McLean but there teas no doubt that the B team players generally played great bowls and on the day would have chakra any team in the central division. * * * In Hardy-Jones’ rink, which defeated Lonsdale, Loos and Skoglund played particularly well. * * * Cook's defeat of Mills was the only victory for Avon A. Mills was unfortunate in being without his regular lead, Kidd and in striking Quin and Kers at the top of their form. * * * Dickinson did not have- the rink that h skipped to such effect at Wei Itngtdn and New Plymouth buty on the day he was inferior to the B team skip, F. Weston, whose rink de feated him. * * * In the Stratford games Liddell made no race of it with McMillan, who was defeated by 30 points, but Liddell played his best game of the season. * * * MacDonald beat Williams by 11 pointe in a good contest, the feature being MacDonald’s splendid drawing. 1 * * * Harris had a comfortable win over his- less experienced opponent Masters, although the losing skip produced good bovls throughout and was well supported by Lawson. Boyd was not in form. Beal and Thompson were leading well and the veteran Thompson is playmg as well as ever. * * *

Sunvn rfleld was the outstanding player in Davis’ rink whilst Hillock was very sound and saved hit side freguentiy. Davis was overshadowed by Smith and at no stage of the game did he Iqck like losing.

* * * Curtis and Pope had an even struggle, Curtis, by his b tter drawing game, winning narrowly. Clark always had the upper hand over Coe who incidentally lost h's first game in the competition. Clark’s team were drawing too well and had Coe not played to aggressiv ly the result might have been different. Douglas was the "star" player.

* * * On Saturday both A and B teams again meet and it will occasion no surprise to see the B team turn th tablet; as the rinks will be stronger. It was unfortunate the one-day tourney had to be abandoned on Wednesday, owing to rain, but it is to be hoped to stage the tournament during the next fortnight.
