BUDGE MEMORIAL.
Honouring The Memory Of A Fine Sportsman. During his long life in the district the late Mr A. W. Budge, in whose memory the A. W. Budge memorial race is included on the programme at the March meeting of the Stratford Racing Club, took a prominent part in local . affairs and rendered great service to racing, acting in honorary positions as starter and judge* to various clubs. He achieved what is probably a unique honour in New Zealand, being made a life-member of three clubs—the Egmont Racing Club, the Stratford Racing Club, arid the Taranaki Jockey Club He waE president, of the Stratford Racing Club and achieved marked success as an owner and breeder. His horse Yoma was a winner of the Egmont and Taranaki Cups, of the Wellington Handicap, and of the Fendalton Handicap, Christchurch. Yoma way beaten by a nose by Rapine, in the Wanganui Cup, thus being narrowly deprived of winning the Taranaki, Egmont and Wanganui Cups in the one season. A full sister, Pouma, was also a brilliant sprinter, and set up a course record at Ilawera in a six furlong race. In one year Pouma and Yoma won £7,000 in stakes. Other horses owned and raced by Mr Budge were Bowsprit a.ncF Tikatere. In his early days Mr Budge was manager of the Manaia branch of the Bank of New Zealand, leaving this position to take up auctioneering with the rfirm of Budge and McCutchin. Later in Stratford he became a director of a numlber of prominent firms, including the Loan Deposit Company, the Stratford Pictures and Amusements Ltd., and the Stratford Printing and Publishing Company. He was a president of the Stratford Club.
