FOR SOUTH AFRICA.

N.Z. SHIPMENT. Select Stud Of Border j Leicester Sheep. Following on the export in 1934 of | a number of Border Leicester Sheep j to South Africa, a further order has ' been received for a number of ewes ’ and rams with which to form a small | select stud of Border Leicester sheep, j This order was received by the Stud j Stock Department of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Co., Ltd., who were responsible tor the previous shipment, and is being shipped on account of Colonel F. L. Popham, a prominent breeder of Natal. , Colonel Popham, who purchased a number of sheep from the 1934 shipment, when placing his order stipulated that any animals selected must be high quality sheep showing plenty of constitution and character. With these specifications in view the Compay’s South Island Stud Stock Officer visited many studs in the Otago districts where the bulk of the Dominion’s Leicester studs are, and finally selected a number of sheep from the well-known flock of Mr. James A. Edwards of Otikerama, Gore. The consignment comprising twenty shearling stud ewes, four stud shearling ranis and two special stud rams, was shipped from Wellington by the “Wanganella” on Thursday last and

will be transhipped at Sydney into the “Autolycus” for the final stage of the journey to Durban. The twenty ewes forwarded are the pick of Mr. Edward’s last season’s drop and together with the four ranis were selected for their type, constitution and quality. The two special stud rams, 91/35, and 94/35 are handsome deep bodied sheep carrying quality fleeces and will doubtless do much to further the reputation of New Zealand Border Leicester sheep overseas. Included in the large shipment of sheep and horses taken from the country by the M.V. “Wanganella” on her last trip, was a stud Romnty Ram consigned to Launceston, Tasmania. This shearling ram (NB No. 51/35) carrying a particularly nice fleece of well crimped, even wool esp daily good on the backf was bred at the Wararapa Training Farm, and has been sold to Mr. R- Gubb. of Cleave-land, Launceston. The s. lection and shipping arrangements were made through the Stnd Stock Department of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Co., Ltd , on behalf of the breeders.
