Hats Over the Cliff!
Hat-snatching by a capricious wind caused some perturbation to patrons at the Ashhurst meeting on Anniversary Day, when a strong gale was blowing. Ladies guarded their hats carefully, but on numerous occasions, when they momentarily relaxed their vigilance, a gust of wind would whisk them into the air and whirl them out of sight among the crowd of racegoers. Many frantic attempts to rescue headgear that aTTruptly disappeared in this manner were witnessed. Most unfortunate, however, were those, mainly men, whose hats were swiftly lifted off and carried over the sheer cliff at the back of the stands on to the river flat below. Tempting bribes were offered small boys to retrieve them, but it needed a very, strong inducement for anyone to go pursuing a hat across country down there. Crumpled and damaged headar was the order of the day.
