SAFETY CAMPAIGN.
New System Of Traffic Control In Small Towns.
Press Association—Copyright. Palmerston N., Last Night
When being congratulated to-day by a deputation on the success of his road safety campaign the Minister of Transport, the Hon. R. Semple, took the opportunity of explaining further steps he proposed to take by way of legislation shortly to lessen still more the number of accidents and fatalities and to teach motorists road manners. Mr Semple said his proposal was for the Transport Department to take over traffic control in all towns of <5OOO inhabitants and under, the fees received and the fines imposed being devoted to employing inspectors, "not pimps,” whose duty it would be to educate motorists. Safety on the road depended not on terrorising drivers but on training them. When a man was fined it was proper that his fine should go towards making life- on the roads safer, the Minister added. There was no reasonable objection to pooling fines and fees for such purpose and so making the roads safe. The Minister said he was extremely grateful to the automobile associations for the co-operation they had given him. The work they were doing on the highways was wonderful.
