He was wheeled on to the bal- j cony th-is afternoon in order to enjoy I the sun. Because of his dislike of inactivity, i Pope Pius has proved a difficult pati- I ent, stated the Vatican City corres- ‘ pondent of the American Associated Press on December 15. He insisted constantly in the first days of his illness that he should be allowed to get up, and his physician. Professor Amanti Milani, had to call in the Rev. Father Agostino Gemelli of Milan, an old friend of the Pontiff and also a physician, to persuade him that he I was too ill to arise. It was not until last Thursday, six days after he had been stricken, that the Pope was permitted to leave his bed for a brief period and be carried in an armchair to his private chapel to hear mass.
