GRACIE FIELDS.
WORLD’S HIGHEST PAID ARTIST. | I £150,000 FOR THREE FILMS. i I Grade Fields earns more money I than any othev stage or screen j artist in the world. For the picture she Is making now for Mr Easll Dean, at Ealing studios, she will receive £5O,- j 000. For each of the .two previous ! pictures she made for him she : received the same amount. That means that since February of last year, when she signed Hie conIrivcl, she has earned £150,U00 for film acting alone. J In addition to this money, she re- ; ceives a large sum annually us royalI ties on iieu gramophone records, has < an hicume from stage appearances, and I receives a higher, lee Ilian anyone else for her occasional broadcasts.
630 Guineas for One Appearance. I The last time she appeared in a ! 8.8. G. studio it was reported that she I v.as paid 600 gumeaa. She has row signed a new contract j with 20lh U mtury-Eox. under which slie will make tour pictures in two years, and, as her agent Mr Bert Aza ■ says, an p ‘tist does not sign a new I contract lor less money than she is al- ■ ready receiving.” No other film star can touch her earning capacity, even international figures like Garbo and Dietrich. Dietrich received £50,000 for her part in “ The Garden of Allah,” but that was for one picture; not a threepicture contract like Grade's that would guaiantee her the same aniouni each time. in view of her unique position it seems contradictory that the area in which Grade's films are really popular is extremely isolated. West End audiences do not like them. The South of England audiI ences do not rave about them, and they will not go In America But she is worshipped m certain localities. Any company which makes a picture with .Grade Fields as the star is in a unique position. It is able Io budget with remarkable accuracy. Thai is to say, it knows that it w II earn in gross receipts more than £HH»,000. The average, 1 bel.eve, is £105,UOO. The cost—because expensive sets and expensive supporting casts are not necessary—can be confined to £35.000 or £40,000. Tills, of course, . Is exclusive of Grade’s salary. Profit of at Least £10,003. When the £50,000 she earns Is added to the cost of production, the total becomes £85,000 or £90,000. leaving a profit of al least £lO,OOO, possibly £15.000. That is a very comfortable position for any pru- - dueer, and by ensuring it Grade earns : her salary. : Thai brings a second query. How Is it, that, Grade can ensure this? ’ Briefly, the answer is that she is a 1 great artist with a unique appeal. How much of each £50,000 Grade gives away quietly to bring a little Happiness and comfort here ami there I as she goes along, no one but she will ever know. She does not talk about that sort, of thing. 1 But those who know hep best know j also that she Is one of the most generous persons anyone could meet.
