THE WORST NIGHT YET

POPE’S CONDITION. PARALYSIS THREAT. Vatican Circles Deeply Concerned About Condition Received I I. 10 a.b.) London, January 21. The Exchange’s Rome correspondent says that all the Pope’s audiences have been cancelled. Dr. Milani is in constant attendance. The Pope, who had bad turns in the early morning and at noon, had not slept till 8 a.m., then only for 90 minutes and again for 45 minutes in the afternoon. His condition is slightly improved as the result of sedatives, but Dr. Milani is perturbed because of the threat of paralysis to his legs. Vatican circles are deeply concerned. A Vatican City message says that the Pope passed the worst night yet. .

In a message to the Archbishop of Milan the Pope says: “I offer my pains to God, for my suffering is part of the mystic body of Christ. Especially do I offer them for Russia, Spain, and Mexico.”

A later message to-day states that the Pope’s condition is precarious, and it is feared that gangrene is developing.
