ROAD SAFETY.

MINISTER’S REQUEST. County Council To Supply Information. In pursuance of a request from the Minister of Transport (Mr. r_ tsemp.e) the Stratford County Council at to-day’s meeting dealt with a number of recommendations affecting road safety and the Minister will be advised of the action to be taken by the council. “The New Zealand Road Safety council having fully investigated the question of road conditions in relation to motor accidents, has made certain consequent recommendations to me as Minister of Transport,” stated a communication from the Minister.

“These recommendations include a number of points dealing with hazards arising out of faulty road conditions. It is thought desirable to draw the attention of road controlling authorities to the conditions which produce such hazards.” Altogether the Minister mentioned thirteen matters bearing on road safety but with the majority the council had either taken precautions or was not concerned.

'‘Most of his remarks are good,” said the chairman, Mr. T. R. Anderson. “As far as white lines are concerned it is questionable whether studded lines would not be better on account of the cost of painting.” A resolution was passed favouring the Road Safety Council acquiring small areas of land in order to provide visibility at intersections.

“I think the time is not far distant when legislation will be put through compelling property owners to cut back corners for a distance of 75 feet,” said Mr. Anderson. “With fast traffic on main highways something will have to be done,” he added.

Centre-line marking of roads was supported on parts of the East road and it was decided to obtain information regarding the cost of studding. Painting, it was stated, would cost 8/- per chain. Riding members and the engineer were asked to notify cases where hedges interfered with visibility and file council will then invoke its powers to have them removed.
