A SECOND CHANCE

Swimming Club May Yet Have Champions Here. Through a setback to the interests I of ywimm ng in the Dominion gener - ally, th 3 postponement of the New • Z aland Sen or Swimming Champion ships, which were to be held at New Plymouth next month, until next year is an unexpected piece of good fortune for the Stratford Swimming Club. When the meeting was first allot ted by the New Zealand Association, to New Plymouth, the Stratford cl mb , was under the impression that the new municipal baths would be ready by that time and accordingly applied 2or the off-night, for a Stratford carnival date. This was granted and most of the prominent swimmers who were taking part in the champ ionships had agreed to swim at Stratford on that night. The absurdly long time taken by ) the Doans Board to consider th. Borough Council’s proposals for financing the building of the bath, however, delayed the scheme and the. Stratford Club, having no suitable venu: had to abandon the date, which was then taken by Hawera . With the postponement of the championships, hope of being able tc lake exceptional opportunity to hold a really big carnival is rem wed and the clu bintends making every effort, to secure the date. There is little danger that the new baths will not be ready by this date as the preparation of plans and specifications being carried out by Mr. F. G. Chaplin, Hastings, is nearly completed and the work will be commenced shortly. This bath wiil provide ample facilities both for swim mers and spectators, even for such an important carnival, as this is ex-

pected to be, and the occasion should provide not only a splendid baptism for the new pool but a welcome stimulant for the club which is at present struggling against extreme difficulties through lack of facilities.
