TO SAVE OUR HERITAGE

“SHARE THE EMPIRE."

ABANDON IMPERIALISM Labour Leader’s Views On World Problems. Press Association—Copyright. Received 1 1 a.m. Paris, January 17. “If our common French and British heritage is to be saved, we must sacrifice some of the toys we have held dear for many years, including that of complete sovereignty and the prestige of the Empire,” said Major Attlee, Leader of the British Labour Party, in a “Share the Empire” speech at a meeting of politicians and public men. “I do not suggest carving up the world anew, but I do urge the abandonment of our conceptions of Imperialism and urge an invitation to nations to| enter with us into a full inheritance of the world and to use its products for the general good.” He added that democracy will go down unless we take the necessary steps to save it. TE KUTn FIRE. Defence Department Equipment Badly Damaged. Pres, A ssociatlon—Copyright. Received 1 p.m. Te Kultl, To-day. A disastrous fire occurred at Te Kultl last night at 10 o’clock, when a large iron building was destroyed and a smaller public hall gutted. Both buildings belong to Messrs. Barraud and Abraham. Four machine-guns and two trench mortars belonging to the Defence Department were dam aged and a number of rifles, some harness, and some range-finders were' destroyed. The efforts of the Fire Brigade saved Sparks’ paint shop, but a portion of the stock was damaged. The insurance on the building was held by the Commercial Union Assurance Co., but the amount is not available. The estimated total damage is £3OOO. The origin of the fire is a mystery, as no function was held in the building that night.
