Auckland Claims To Lead the World.
Claimed to be the largest swimming pool in New Zealand, the pool constructed at Milford Beach, North Shore, Auckland, by the Devonport Steam Ferry Company, Limited, has lately been opened. Its length is 141 yards, and its breadth at the widest part, 60 yards.
Facilities include three diving hafts ■ moored in the middle of the pool i and three springboards, one on a< high platform. An area of shallow ; water is enclosed, for children and' non-swimmers. At the official open ' ing, members of the -several, lif e-1 saving and swimming organisations i on the North Shore participated. j Milford Beach is a holiday resort, j and the purpose of constructing the I pool is to add to the attractions. | Since the construction of the water- [ front road on the city side of thel harbour, providing easy access to | beaches in the Eastern Suburbs such i as Mission Bay, Kohim-arama and St j Heliers, it has been considered heces-!
sary to provide an all-tide swimming pool at Milford as a further induce- j ment to people from the city. It is' expected that the new pool willl serve to restore the popularity of the I North Shore beaches against the! competitive bays on the city side of i he Waitemata Harbour.
