NEGRO ARRESTED.

CROWD DEMONSTRATE Ghastly Tragedy Recounted By Accused. Press Association—Copyright. New York, Jan. 14. A negro porter named Green who was arrested in connection with the murder of Mrss. Frank Case, after 40 hours’ intermittent questioning, confessed that he entered the Caso flat for the purpose of" theft. He encountered Mrs Case, smashed her head with a hammer, half strangled her and dragged her screaming to a bath-tub filled with water and drew a bedspread over her to stifle her cries. Green named another negro as an accomplice but the police disbelieve him and think he is trying to involve the other owing to a grudge. Less than 12 hours after his confession Green was indicted on a charge of first degree murder. He entered a plea of not guilty and was taken to jail to await trial on February 1. While being led in the twilight from the courthouse to the jail Green was surrounded by a crowd of about ’BO persons, mostly momen, who screamed imprecations and threats including “lynch him!” They struck him on the head with unbrellas and sticks, spat on him and scratched and slapped him. A patrolman handcuffed to Green was the target of nearly as many blows as the prisoner and was unaible to defend himself owing to the manacles. Other policemen came to the rescue and opened a path for the patrolman and the prisoner to run to the jail. Neither was seriously hurt. No one was arrested.
