FOUR MEN DROWNED. Accident In Hauraki Gulf To Coastal Ship. Press Association —Copyright. Auckland, Jan. 15. It is believed that four men lost their lives when the scow Rang! grounded last evening off Rakino Island, near the entrance to the Hauraki Gulf, in the height of the storm. The body of Charlie De Faire, ship’s cook, was washed ashore, and three are mising. Donald William Woodroffe, a Grammar School boy aged 14, was washed ashore in an unconscious condition. The victims are: — Drowned. Charlie De Faire, cook, aged 64. Missing., Captain P. Petersen, master, aged 54. residing at Epsom and a native of Denmark. Harold Helgeson, seaman, aged 34, residing in the city. Boy named William, making His first trip. The two members of the crew saved were Donald William Woodroffe, aged 14, residing at Epsom, and John Mason, aged 21, seaman, residing at Epsom, who clung to the small boat and were washed ashore. Searchers while the gale was still raging this morning first saw the body of De Faire lying on a ledge out of reach of the breaking waves. He could not be reached until the tide fell. A dinghy was smashed on the beach at Winstone’s Bay. Hauraki Gulf, about 16 miles from Auckland, but there is no sign of the others missing.
