FREE BANANAS
Over-supply Of Fruit In Christchurch.
Ripe bananas are plentiful in Christchurch at present and are being sold at a very heavy loss to importers.
As a result of this,- all the Christchurch orphanages will benefit, as on e firm gave sufficient ripe bananas to allow for two bananas for each orphan in Christchurch. Values in the market to-day were as low as 3/- to 5/- a case of 84Lb of bananas. ’ This was for fruit in over-ripe condition. These bananas were discharged from the Matua at Wellington, and were loaded at both Samoa and Tonga. Unfortunately, the Matua was not able to land this fruit in green condition, thus throwing suddenly on to the market a surplus quantity of ripe fruit.
