Befriended 511 Boys
RESULT OF WAR VOW A man who* (has befriended more than 500 boys |s raising money to start, a permanent boys* club in Richmond, England, where he lives. Already one anonymous Borstal official has promised £250, and money is being contributed from all pdrts of the country. This benefactor of youth is Mr J. W. T. Yates, 44-year-old bachelor, of Kew road, Richmond, who has since 191$ always kept a spare bed in his lodgings. It is the fulfilment of a vow made in that year while recovering from the effects of gas received in the war. “If I ever get better,’’ he promised himself, “I will devote my time to looking after wayward boys.” Since then 511 have passed through his hands, and of these only 17 have turned out failures. Two he has adopted as his own sons.
Mr Yates tramps the streets and along the Embankment at night looking for homeless young men. Recently he completed a 600-mile walk through England,
