SUNKEN MOTOR LORRY
Unsuccessful Attempt To
Raise It.
Press Association—Copyright. Auckland, January 7.
An unsasccesstul attempt to raise the motor-lorry which plunged into the harbour from- the deck of the vehicular ferry Goshawk during stormy weather on December 30 was made-by the Auckland Launch and Towboat Company to-day, strong winds preventing the diver descending to the vehicle. a
The lorry was located about halfway between Devonport and the end of the eastern tide deflector early on Wednesday evening by two launches which had spent the afternoon ing the bottom of the channel with a steel wire. The lorry was in about 42 feet of water at low tide, and a launch, was moored above it for the night. Arrangements were made for a-diver to hook a sling on to the
vehicle to-day, but just as the diver’s punt was being placed in position the
wind freshened and the anchors would not hold. After several hours of effort, operations were suspended and tho wire sweep attached to the lorry was buoyed. A further effort to raise the lorry may be made to-day.
