HOPE FOR POPE’S RECOVERY

RESTING BETTER LONG CONVALESCENCE. Life Of His Holiness In No Immediate Danger. Press Association —Copyright. Vatican City, Jan. 3. The Pope’s condition is described as stationary. Dr. Milan! to-day said: “You can reassure the world that the life of His Hollness is not in immediate danger.” The Pope in the last two nights has rested better. This morning he heard Mass, received communion and gave audience to Cardinal Pacelli and the American, Cardinal Dougherty, who stayed half an hour. Cardinal Dougherty said he was agreeably surprised at the Pope’s appearance, which was not that of a sick man. The Pope, against the advice of secretaries, insisted on receiving other visitors and transacting busiBess, after which Dr. Milan! found that the depression characteristic of the illness had returned, but his ministrations enabled the Pope to pass a better afternoon. The Vatican prelates have now published a communique admitting the seriousness of the illness, but they hope for convalescence, although it will be long. Despite the Pope’s physical weakness, his lucidity of mind and grasp of affairs are still unaffected. He works daily with Cardinal Pacelli. King George's message was communicated to the Pope and gave His Holiness the greatest pleasure.

Bad Heart Renders Prudence Advisable. Press Association —Copyright. (Received 11.45 a.m.) Vatican City, January 4. The first official bulletin concerning the Pape's health traces the history of his illness and says that both legs are affected by arterioscolerosis, but there is reason for hope that there will be a gradual recovery though the condition of his heart renders certain prudenec advisable.
