Mr. G. W. Trotter left by the express this morning on a holiday trip to Wellington. Mrs. J. Hunter. Lower Hutt, is staying with Mrs. C. Spock, Pembroke Road. Messrs. E. McGrath and J. Jones, who have been staying with Mr. and Mrs. C. Speck, Pembroke Road, during the holidays, returned to Petone this morning. Mr. George F. Rox, manager for Messrs. Senia Chostiakoff and Vincent Ryan, arrived in Stratford on Wednesday to complete final arrangements for their forthcoming concert.
Mr. R. W. Cardno, Telegraph office supervisor, will be acting-post-master, following the retirement today of Mr. D. McCready, postmaster, on completion of his service with the d'.partmenl.
Mr J. H. Fletcher, who for the past five and a-half years has been postmaster at Hawera, will retire at the end of January after 40 years’ service with the department. Mr. Fletcher was postmaster at Stratford before his transfer to Hawera.
In the current year’s issue of “New Zealand Best Poems," an anthology compiled by Mr. C. A. Marris, of Wellington, contributions appear by Mr. Douglas A. Stewart, late of the literary staff of "Taranaki Central Press.’’ One of Mr. Stewart’s poems, “To Be
Cut In Stone,” has received special mention by reviewers. A volume of Mr. Stewart’s poems will shortly be on the market.
