In a match played at Waipuku at the week-end ,the Pembroke cricket team was defeated by an innings and 35 v juns. . - 1 • WATCH-NIGHT SERVICE. This evening the local corps of the Salvation Army is holding its usual watch-night service, at which opportunity will be given to express praise for God's past blessings. Start the New Year in a spirit of worship and adoration.

"NEW ZEALAND FREE LANCE.” The current issue of the ‘‘New Zealand Free Lance” is brimful of holiday social chatter and pictures. As usual, the “Free Lance” is profusely illustrated and with pictures appropriate to this time of the year.

NEW YEAR GREETINGS. From the YA station of the National Broadcasting Service, at 11.40, a message of New Year greeting will be broadcast from the Rt. Hon. J. A. Lyons, Prime Minister of Australia. At 11.50. His Excellency the Gover-nor-General of New Zealand will broadcast his New Year message to the nation.

RAIN APPRECIATED BY FARMERS Farmers generally are appreciative of the rain that has fallen in Taranaki. for it has freshened th epastures wonderfully, besides giving root crops a great start. The country is looking remarkably verdant for this time of the year. Some farmers have been caught with their hay cut and not stacked, but this season a cousidsrable quaniity of hay has been saved in good order. Officials of the Stratford Racing Club, on the other hand, are watching weather reports anxiously in the hopes that an all-clear report will be issued for to-morrow and Saturday.
