HAWERA OLD BOYS TAKE THE LEAD IN SOUTH. STRATFORD DEFEAT POWER BOARD AT HAWERA. POSITION OF TEAMS AT CONCLUSION OF FIRST ■ ; ROUND. i Hawera Old Boys took a definite lead in the senior section of the southern division of the Taranaki senior cricket competition on Saturday, defeating its only close rival, Hawera, by 118 runs and two wickets. Old Boys has thus a three-point lead at the end of the first round. Stratford comfortably defeated Power Board in a match in which neither team was at full strength. Patea defeated Kaponga by 29 runs. In the senior B section, Stratford and Stratford Technical High School were decisively defeated by Patea and Manaia respectively. No surprises occurred in northern division play at New Plymouth. New Plymouth High School had little trouble in taking a straight-out win from Old Boys in spite of a fighting innings by the User .and New Plymouth had too great a margin over Western Park, which followed on but failed before the bowling of Aut- • ridge.

Stratford High School Heavily Defeated. j 4. ——— The visiting Stratford Technical High School team suffered a heavy defeat in the senior B cricket match against Manaia at Manaia on Saturday:

School batted first and the tenth wicket fell at the centuiy. The only outstanding innings was that of A. Floyd who made 52. Johnson was .next beat with 10. The Manaia bowler, Duncan was in. form and ■took four wickets at a cost of only 17 runs. Howe took three for 22. Before the fourth wicket had fallen Manaia had passed School’s total and the innings closed at 283 for six. Duncan added to his bowling feat by securing a century, falling at 110. Although he gave several chances Its innings was- a good one, char ] acterised by free hitting. His score j included 17 fours. Budd who secured 82 not out, hit two sixes and was unnot to reach his century befr'rr s nnr s were drawn He and N. Whalen retired when the latter was 21.

INNINGS DEFEAT.

Stratford B. Collapse Against Patea. I. , Patea easily defeated Stratford B in the senior B cricket match at Victoria Park on Saturday, by an innings and 45 runs. Taking first knock for Stratford Tocker and Auldridge failed completely to give their team a start, auldridge play'ed on before he had opened his account and Tocker was dismissed for five. Pollard who fol lowed, compiled a useful 24, but the remaining batsmen were helpless in the hands of the Patea bowlers McKenna and Maule, .who divided the vicke s equally between them. The nings closed for 37, Hickey’s four eing the highest score after th. third Wicket. The dismissal was effected in 40 minutes.

Pat:a went in and compiled 139 (V. Gordon 33, Maule 26), afte vhich Stratford embarked on a second innings which was little more successful than the first and closed for 57. In this session eight of the wickets fell to McKenna for only 15 runs.
