FRIENDLY BOWLING.

Eltham Rinks Defeat Avon. Two rinks of Eltham bowlers visited Stratford for a friendly match against Avon yesterday, to win by 45 points to 40. The scores were: E. A. Stanners, Best McQueen, J. R. Stewart 22 Clemow, Whyte, Dwy’er, North 16 Coleman, Scown, A. A. Stewart, Tiplady 23 Waite, Newland, Lonsdale, ( Hardy-Jones 24 Totals. 45 40 The fifth round of the Shield competitions was played on Saturday in ideal weather, and the greens played fast and true. The Stratford A team by virtue of their decisive win over Inglewood still lead in the competition with Eltham A, runner-up. * if- *

At Stratford the B team overwhelmed Tariki winning by a margin of 47 points. Both rinks, skipped by' Harris and Coe, had run-away • victories, the score being 38 —14 and 37 —15 respectively, while the game between Ewing and Rumball was a hardfought duel, Ewing winning by the odd point. Harris was in good form and never gave Summers a chance, the latter being forced to play an aggressive game. Butcher was drawing consistently whilst Williams did all that he was asked, and Summerfield was. always within reach of “kitty.” Coe maintained his unbeaten record in match play and is playing better than . ever. Beal and Boyd were in great form and contributed largely to the scores, whilst Turnbull played a steady game. Ewing was a little “off colour” and Rumball worked hard to avoid defeat, and perhaps was unlucky not to win, as he played better bowls than his rival. Curtis found the green to his liking whilst Butchart led well, Porritt, however, did not play his usual drawing game, and was seldom past the bead. * * *

During the week-end the Avon Stars changed hands, an Eltham rink (E-acon, Craig, Gower, Brown) succeeding in defeating the holders by 32 —25. A seven and a five contributed to the winners score early in the game, which the holders could not make up, and at one stage of the game the Eltham rink had a lead of 22—6. Brown outplayed Williams on the day, but Clark held Gower throughout and put in some good play 4 Bmbchei- and Summerfield were not in form, being aften short of the head, whilst Bacon led ‘well the whole game and Craig excelled himself. The winners on the form displayed will be hard to beat in future games. A reminder is given that entries for the Central Taranaki Xmas Tournament close with the secretary on Monda? next at 8 p.m.

Two rinks from the Stratford club participated in a one-day tournament at Paritutu on Monday last and we congratulate the rink skipped by Williams in bringing home the “thick” end of the prize, beating a New Plymouth rink skipped by A. Boon in the final 11—9. Two heads to play Boon was leading by 9 —5, but Williams on the 9th head gained a 5 and an additional point on the last head
