With a record offering of ISO7C bales for the first-of-season sale, the opening of the Tamaru wool auction to-day delighted South Canterbury woolgrowers, who saw a realisation of their most sanguine hopes. The catalogues were of a good mixed class, and prices over the first three were very firm on Christchurch rates with the bidding more spread than at the City auction. There was au apparent firming on the Christchurch rates for three-quarter and crossbreds, on account. of the clips being of a liner description. Dian that offered in Christchurch. Japanese buyers were operating freely on elastic limits. The first catalogue saw super-merino reach 23. pl for a 12 bale lot, which was exceeded in the third catalogue by' 7 four-bale lots which brought 24d.
Merino prices realised 19?,d. Starti wg at 201 d for super-half-bred, the ; price went to 253 d in the third cata- | logue, while top prices for half-bred necks reached 21’,d and bellies' 163 d. Super crossbred ranged from 16|d to 20’id for a lot of 5 bales of ewe super. Three-quarter-bred ranged from PJ3d to 21 id. for seven bales. Necks rose to ISML There was an almost complete clearance under the hammer, except in cases where the owners fixed the reserve above parity. Several lots of halfbreds and Corriedales were passed lat prices as high as 21d. The range of prices.was:—• Merio: Super 20d to 25R1, average Il7d to 193 d, inferior 15d to 163 d. * Halfbred: 21d to 253 d, average 17d, ’j inferior lid to 163,d. [ Crossbred: Super ISd to 201 d, average Hid to 173 d, inferior 13d to 15Jd. Corriedale: Super 20d to 25Jdi, average 17d to 9-Jd, inferior 15d to Hii/d. Pieces: Merino to 10.' t d, halfbred to 21.,d. threequarter-bred to Hid; crossbred to 13MI; Corriedale to 173 d; necks to 19d; bellies 13d to 21d.
