TIGER CUBS FOR ZOO
Being Kept In India Till Older.
Press Association —Copyright. Wellington, To-day.
It is not yet known exactly when the three tiger cubs presented to .the Wellington Zoo by Captain A. G. Matthew, of Kirkee, Poona, are likely to arrive here. But it seems unlikely that they will be on exhibition before the' end of the summer at earliest.
In June, when the cubs were still only- three weeks old, Captain Matthew, an Indian Army officer, wrote to the Governor-General, Lord Galway, offering the cubs as a gift to the Wellington Zoo. The proposal was communicated to the zoo authorities, who accepted the cubs, and obfainqd. the necessary permits for their importation. Quarters were prepared for them at the zoo, arrangements being made to shift the puma into a new cage specially constructed, and to give his spa'cious enclosure to the newcomers. It was then anticipated that the tigers would be shipped by the* Narbada, which is due in New Zealand shortly, but. the town clerk, Mr E. P. Norman, yesterday said that no word had been received of their departure. The cubs would be held in India until they were more mature.
