Fenders Being Called For 19 Contracts. Press Association —Copyright. Wellington, Last Night. The. construction of 375 houses in the Wellington district as the first large housing scheme prepared by the new Department of Housing Construction will begin early in the new year. Tenders will be called immediately for 1!) contracts. The Government also intends to invite applications for die lease of the new joinery factories at Kai warm, Wellington, and Penrose, Auckland, to firms offering the manufacture of joinery on the most favourable terms. Officially it is estimated that the construction of 400 houses in 28 weeks will directly provide employment for about 770 men. The department now has in hand the preparation of contracts for the Auckland scheme. The first group of houses will be situated at Orakei.
