WOMEN POLICE

NEW ZEALAND FAR BEHIND. Speaking at the Dunedin annual conference of the Society for the Protee tion of Women and Children, the president, Dr. Siedeberg McKinnon, stated that New Zealand would soon be the only country without women police, aud urged the need for their appointment in the Dominion. “The movement is making headway everywhere,’’ she said, “France and Poland are both increasing their women police assistants, the United States has policewomen in nearly every city, Australia is well equipped, and in South Aunstralia alone there are 14 female officers. China, Japan, Turkey, and even Burma have all adopted ’ms reform and the work of the policewomen is much appreciated by the autnorities. “It is not right that women and giris should have to tell their stories to men in sexual cases. If Britain and nil her other Dominions have seen fit m institute this reform, surely it is ■ime New Zealand followed.’’
