VIGILANCE COMMITTEE

STRATFORD PROJECT

Chamber Of Commerce Plans n. For Year.

A proposal for the setting up of a vigilance committee) tio watch legislation was made to last, night’s meeting of the Stratford Chamber of Commerce by the secretary, Mr F. E. Clarke.

The proposal was, said Mr Clarke, to have a committee which would watch legislation and bring questions arising from it before the chamber. Mr J. B. Richards: We cannot keep up with it world going at 50 miles per hour when we are 'walking. Legislation is being passed at such a rate at present that even .the lawyers cannot keep in touch. Mr Clarke said that the idea ftfas not to watch all legislation but oily that which affected business. He instanced the recent legislation which made it compulsory' for business places to have “No Dogs Permitted” signs affixed. 'lt was possible that some businessmen might not be immediately aware of such legislation and might suffer in consequence. The knowledge that they would gain in investigating such legislation would be of great assistance to most of them and would help them in their daily work.

• Members were of the opinion that the whole chamber should act in this direction and no motion w’as passed. Mr J. B. Richards moved a motion that the district Public Works Engineer be invited to become an exofficio member of the chamber. This course was decided on. Committees appointed were: Finance committee; Messrs J. C. Allen, M. Hughson. Membership committee: Messrs Rex Watson, L. J. Rowell and J. B. Richards. Those present w-ere: Messrs F. T. Hale (chairman), Rex G. Watson, J. B. Richards, L.' J. Rowell. M. Hughson, D. McLean, H. F. Vosseler, J. C. Allen, D. McCready (postmaster), and R. Bowie (stationmaster).
