BOWLING.

(By

“Jack.”)

The shield competitions were continued last Saturday, but weather conditions were not conducive to good bowls. The greens were also heavy after the rece'nt heavy rains. The Stratford B team playing Eltham A went under by 14 points, although the games were well contested. In the Ewing—Stewart game the Eliham skip showed he had returned to form and saved his team time and again by well drawn shots and emerged a winner by eight points. Ewing played very' consistently but was not good enough. Williams had an uphill fight against Tiplady and: was always behind, the Stratford skip and Butcher finding the grejen too heavy. Nowell played one of his best games and was always in a handy position. The game between Davis and Brown was a close struggle, and although Brown had a commanding lead at tea time, Davis staged a great recovery and they finished all square. * * St11l the Coe —Campbell game, it looked as if Coe would have an easy" win, but Campbell produced some good bowls in 'the closing stages and went down by three. Curtis had an even battle with Casey, both teams being evenly balanced. Casey eventually won by the odd point. Bush for Eltham was the outstanding player, his drawingbeing very consistent. The holders, Stratford, sustained a challenge from a strong Eltham rink over the week-end. Played at Stratford it was the keenest game witnessed this season, and the green was fast and true. The scores were very even for the first few heads, but the Stratford rink skipped by Williams played to a man and were too solid for the formidable Eltham rink skipped by Drabble, Two heads from home the hold'ers were 3 up on the board but Williams drawing perfectly added a further 3 and 2 points to win by 33—25. * * ft As was expected the Avon A bowling -team proved too strong for the B team in. the match on Saturday. Competition 'was nevertheless very keen and several of the games provided excellent contests.

McLean defeated Cook by' 2 points aftei- a close game right through. Weston defeated Lonsdale by 4 points. Lonsdale, although beaten, played a good game and repeatedly saved his side from a big score against them. The game between Hucker and Bulman resulted in a runaway victory for Bulman. In the head before tea he chalked up an eight. Settling down after tea Hucker played steady bowls, to score 18 and go down finally by about 20 points. ** . * Mills and Wesson finished up with a difference of 2 points only', with 3 heads to go. Mills was 10 behind and with a 4 and two 2’s he all but evened up. The game between Dickinson and Hardy-Jones was neck and neck all through, Dickinson eventually winning by 3 points. * * Both Stratford and Avon clubs have sent nominations for .the New Zealand tournament to be held at Wellington on January 4. Sutton, Kidd, Ewing, Clarke and O’Gorman, T. T. Skoglund, P. Skoglund, O. Skoglund will represent Stratford.
