TIME SAVES PATEA.

STRATFORD SCORE WELL.

Captain Leads Batting Figures. L Playing on their own pitch, the ■Stratford batsmen, undeterred by the ■failure of the opening man, Gray, who ■jvas despatched l.b.w. without scoring, Siealt freely with the bowling of the “Visiting Patea team and ran up a score of 170 for nine wickets before declaring. With a little less than half Rhe afternoon to go, Patea’s task of passing the Stratford total was a difficult one. The batsmen were not inclined to take chances and never got on top of the bowling. When the Opening batsman, Edwards was despatched without scoring, Stratford’s chances of an outright win appeared bright. The following batsmen settled down, however, and with a useful 14 by Bourke and a fighting innings by the seventh man, Jones, who was still at the crease with 17 to his credit when stumps were _diown, the visitors managed to play out time with three wickets still to fall. Hall, who opened with Gray, had four boundaries to his credit when he reached the 20 mark, and appeared to be settling down for his third successive century when he was clean bowled by Peterson, his whole innings yielding 24 runs. The honours of the day went to Beere, Stratford captain, who, taking the wicket after Ewart and Bonner, had been despatched scoreless, knocked up a sterling 54 and left the wicket undefeated. McKenzie, who went most of the distance with him amassed a total of 38 runs.
