TARANAKI GOLF.
F. Quin Wins Champion Of Champions.
! Returning a splendid 73 after a bad start in the second round, F. Quin (New Plymouth) won the Taranaki ; champion of champions golf event at > Hawera. at the week-end with a score ; | of 80—73 —153. There were only five .! of the 13 competitors present and the ; j contest was robbed of much of its ; j interest. Windy conditions prevailed and the greens were tricky. i K. Neal played sound golf but was ‘ weak with his seconds. He made a i lemarkable recovery at the 17th in : .he afternoon. After getting into , | the hedge he played out to within • eight feet of the pin. Jeffries was ■| not. in form. Thomson was con- ■ j sistent, but did not produce his best form. j Details are; j F. Quin 80—73—153 j R. Holden 78—77—155 T. A. Thomson 80 —80 —160 K. Neal 85—81—166 J. Jeffries 89—80—169 i Research Methods. “The methods of handling agricultural research in New Zealand are shocking,” announced by J. D. Hall, at a meeting of the North Canterbury ; Farmers’ Union. The chairman (Mr. G. C. Warren) was startled out of his accustomed calm. “Is that all right to put in the newspapers?” he asked I Mr. Hall. “Well”, said Mr. Hall, “I as only telling you what is a fact.” j There was not sufficient co-operation between the Government departments concerned, he said. They were as jealous of one another as cats. i j Shooting of Seagulls. i There is great indignation amongst j the residents of Plimmerton at the | destruction and wounding of seagulls ;by rifle shot on ' the Plimmerton I Beach. A number of birds have been i wounded, and it the shooting is allow- | ed to continue, apart from the wani ton cruelty, it is felt that the beach • will lose one of its interesting and at- ; tractive features—the flocks of j mackerel gulls whose tameness and j beauty are well known. The matter ! has been placed in the hands of the ! police. ; German Patroitism. ; When giving an address at Aucki land on Wednesday' on the use of ■ aeroplanes in warfare. Professor R. ; M. Algie said London was only four ’ hours’ flying time from Berlin, eight hours if the attackers returned home 1 (reports the “New Zealand Herald"). T’fhit 1 have seen something of German youth,” he said, “and 1 am satisfied that if they felt they were doing | something for the Fatherland the get- ■ ting back would not interest them. I Their patriotism is extraordinary.” •
