JUDGING AT WORKS Stratford Show Entries Attract Interest Judging of export bacon pigs alive and again dressed was introduced to Taranaki last week, entries being judged on Thursday at the Stratford show and on Saturday at the Hawera works. The class attracted considerable interest and the judges at the works, Messrs. C. Hausmann (Feilding) and F. Walker (Hawera) said the entries were creditable. The awards were; Works judging: N.Z. Co-op Dairy co., Te Awamutu (145„ 147), 1; Mrs. A. W. M. Jardine, Stratford (135, 141), 2; J. Meads, Hawera (164, 148), 3; E. R. Vernail, Frankton (136, 125), and W. H. Banning, Stratford (143, 138), equal 4. Show judging; M. 11. Lepper (Midhirst) 1, H. C. Taylor and Sons (Ngaere) 2, L. H. Holland (Kaponga) 3.

The pigs were killed at Messrs. T. 11. Walker and Sons’ factory, 'Where the judging, which took some hours, was done. There was a good muster of farmers, who listened with interest to the comments of the judges. A special vote of thanks w r as accorded Messrs. Henry L. Lane and Co., Ltd., for giving a canteen of cutlery valued at £52 10s as the first prize, the action being considered evidence of Tooley Street’s real interest in New Zealand products. Mr. Hausmann said the entries were reduced first to seven by eliminating those that were overfat or not finished enough. The last seven pens were of ,th e best quality, with sides of good conformation. The parallel back fat, well finished hams, light, shoulders and long middles in keeping with the weight were what was required. The competition would serve to show farmers the type of bacon pigs the London, market wanted.
