HOUSE CARRIED BY ASSAULT
MADMAN SHOT DEAD.
(Received June 2, 5.5 p.m.) Sydney, June 2. A tremendous crowd witnessed the last stage of the siege of the Chinaman. Has refuge was a small weatherboard cottage in East street, in the centre of the Chinese quarter. The police kept up a heavy fusillade with rifles and revolvers, to which the madman frequently replied. The Fire Brigade got several hoses to work, but in attempting to secure a better position two firemen were shot. They were not severely injured. The siege continued until ten o'clock, whenj after pouring in great quantities of-water, the-police made a sudden rush and burst in the door. A civilian accompanying them shot the Chinaman through the head, dead. The two firemen who were shot make the total number of victims seventeen, most of them being slightly wounded. Preparations were made to bomb the maniac out_, but the final rush made this unnecessary.
Press representatives, running the gauntlet of several bullets, participated in the final rush.
